Shooting match for Sunday, August 22, 2010 was CANCELED DUE TO FLOODING.

Range was under water as of Saturday due to water backed up from nearby Lick Creek.

We hope to see you at our next match on September 26, 2010.

We’re starting our Main Match in July at 9:30 a.m. [instead of 10 a.m.] because the weather is supposed to be rather warm…

Wear COOL comfortable clothes to beat the heat [the costume police will NOT be present].

There will be a Wild Bunch category in the Main Match this month.  Please tell us when you register if you’re shooting Wild Bunch.  We’ll also have Long Range Rifle Side Matches before the Main Match.

We had 35 shooters in two posses with only two clean shooters to show for it — Turquoise Tony and Boben Weev.

Although stages were posted well ahead of time, and explanations were plentiful before each stage, many shooters managed to mangle them and rack up a few misses and penalties.

Nonetheless, laughter abounded,  grilled burgers for lunch were great, as was the company and outstanding posse cooperation.  Thanks to everyone who helped before, during and after the match.

Range is Wet – June 24, 2010
According to Brisco Big’n our club president, the shooting range is wet, but not flooded.  Plan to park in the lot by the long range area, as we won’t have access to the lower grassy area as it’s too soft for vehicles.

Side Matches
As of this writing, Marshal J.D. Oak plans to hold long-range rifle side matches before our regular Main Match from 8:10 – 9:30 a.m.

For those of you who like a circus challenge before the Main Match [and if range conditions permit],  we’ll either have a particularly evil reactive target, “El Conquistador” brought and set up by Chisholm Cheeks, OR Turquoise Tony’s Evil Flyers with his famous ‘97 Shotgun Challenge.  Either way, it’s sure to be a blast…so bring extra ammo.

The 2010 Illinois Championship of SASS [Single Action Shooting Society] was held on May 20 – 23, 2010, with 221 participants at the World Shooting Complex outside Sparta, Illinois.  The Long Nine Cowboys were were well represented with over 20 shooters who are either members of our club or shoot with us regularly at monthly matches.

Our own Boben Weev and Miss Weev were organizers of of the event, along with the host club, the Kaskaskia Cowboys.  They put on an excellent match with something for everyone, attracting 22 vendors from several states.  The stages were fun, fast and logical, yet challenging with plenty of movement.

There were generous door prizes, a well-attended banquet with live entertainment and costume contest, plus numerous awards.  Boben Weev served as Match Director, working with a talented and willing crew.

Below are highlights of the Long Nine Cowboys, including:

- 2 Illinois Champions
- Fastest cowboy rifleman on the range
- Prettiest B-Western Cowboy

Not all participants at the match were from Illinois, hence, it’s possible to have a different standing for Illinois than in the overall standing.

Why a week earlier? Many cowboys & cowgirls who shoot at Long Nine matches are participating in the Illinois State SASS Championship “Spring Round-up”  in Sparta, Illinois, which falls on the same weekend as our regular shoot.

“We’ve done this now for the past 3 or 4 years and have gotten some great shooters from it so we’re doing it again this year.  Start time is approximately 10:30 am on the ranges where we shoot our matches.”

This is for new cowboy shooters (not people who have never shot a gun before) who might be a little leary of coming out to a shoot – this allows them to get their ‘feet wet’ so to speak and learn the rules of the game and shoot a stage or two.  There is no charge for this clinic and we will supply guns and ammo if they don’t already have their own.  Please let anyone you know who might be interested know about this clinic – it’s a great opportunity!!”
