We had 46 shooters in three posses including 2 new shooters, but alas we only managed four clean shooters in the mix — Don Jorge, Black Jack McGinnis, Lady Viper and Spud Davenport.

We enjoyed some amusing and challenging stages written by Match Director, Don Jorge, although we did have to slog through puddles as neighboring Lick Creek crept up steadily throughout the match, making for muddy conditions at the 5th match in a row.  Thanks to everyone who helped set up and tear down the stages before and after the match.

July’s Clean Shooters battled heat, humidty and puddles to hit every target without a penalty.

What are they and how do you earn them?

You accrue match points each time you attend a Long Nine Cowboys match.

At the end of each calendar year, each shooter’s Match Points are totaled to determine the Top Five Guns of the Long Nine Cowboys from among its members.

For each match, you earn Match Points as follows:
1 point for attending the match without disqualification
5 points for shooting a clean match (no procedurals or safety violations)
3 points for being 1st in category
2 points for being 2nd in category
1 point for being 3rd in category
1 point for each place below your overall standing

Example:
Annie Oakley attends a match and comes in 3rd place overall.
Here are the points she would earn:

1 point – She attends the match and is not disqualified.
5 points – She shoots a clean match, hitting every target with no procedurals.
3 points – She comes in
first in her Lady Cowboy category.
27 points – She comes in 3rd out of 30 shooters.

We usually finish around noon or 1 p.m.
Parking is close-by and on nicely-drained gravel.

This is a small fun shoot that happens once a year, hosted by the Lake Fork Cowboys [not an official SASS™ club].
It’s a great venue for newer shooters and gives experienced shooters the chance to shoot different types of targets, including some flying clays.  It’s also a great chance to introduce non-Cowboy shooters to Cowboy Action Shooting [CAS].
Cowboy shooters, we ask that you please wear your cowboy/cowgirl garb.
Spectators and guests are welcome.  Ear protection & eye protection are required.
The range has a porta-potty but no running water.  There is a grocery store, fuel, and restaurants in the town of Atwood.

We had 35 shooters in two posses with only two clean shooters to show for it — Turquoise Tony and Boben Weev.

Although stages were posted well ahead of time, and explanations were plentiful before each stage, many shooters managed to mangle them and rack up a few misses and penalties.

Nonetheless, laughter abounded,  grilled burgers for lunch were great, as was the company and outstanding posse cooperation.  Thanks to everyone who helped before, during and after the match.

End of Trail is the World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting and is open to any SASS [Single Action Shooting Society] member.   The 2010 End of Trail took place from June 21 – Jun 27 at Founders Ranch, outside Albuquerque, New Mexico.

End of Trail is the Nation’s oldest and largest Cowboy Action Shooting competition and Wild West festival draws more than 1000 authentically dressed competitors from around the world to vie for the World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting.

A western United States tradition dedicated to preserving the history of the Old West, End of Trail is a celebration of the Old West Cowboy lifestyle, surrounded by a four-day festival open to the public and featuring traditional entertainment and activities for the entire family.

June’s Clean Shooters were few and far between with just two out of 35 shooters hitting every target and missing any penalties.

Range is Wet – June 24, 2010
According to Brisco Big’n our club president, the shooting range is wet, but not flooded.  Plan to park in the lot by the long range area, as we won’t have access to the lower grassy area as it’s too soft for vehicles.

Side Matches
As of this writing, Marshal J.D. Oak plans to hold long-range rifle side matches before our regular Main Match from 8:10 – 9:30 a.m.

For those of you who like a circus challenge before the Main Match [and if range conditions permit],  we’ll either have a particularly evil reactive target, “El Conquistador” brought and set up by Chisholm Cheeks, OR Turquoise Tony’s Evil Flyers with his famous ‘97 Shotgun Challenge.  Either way, it’s sure to be a blast…so bring extra ammo.
